AN UNUSUAL LAUNCH Put. 26.4.1955. In connection with the plans of Forth Chemicals Ltd, to more than double the capacity of its plant at Grangemouth, Scotland, for the production of monomeric Styrene, a unique launching took place on the Thames at Greenwich. An important item of equipment in the project is a distillation unit of which the principal part is a steel column measuring 140ft in length and 14ft in diameter, weighing 85 tons. To give some idea of the length - it will be remembered that Nelson's Column is 140 ft high. As the column has been made at Greenwich at the works of G.A, Harvey & Co, and to overcome transport difficultes, the column is being made watertight and transported by sea. This picture shows the column being rolled down to the water for the launching. Industry - Chemicals
