A Viking’s most important weapon was his sword, which would be up to a metre (3.2 feet) long. The pommel of the sword found in Schwedt is decorated with Scandinavian animal designs. The inscription (‘ULFBERTH’) suggests that the blade was created in a workshop in the Rhine-Maas area. (HN)
