Portrait of President Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885) Union General during the American Civil War and 18th President of the United States. Artist Samuel Bell Waugh painted this unusually vivid, lifelike oil sketch of President Grant from life in 1869, possibly before Grant’s inauguration as President because he is wearing his military uniform. Arthur Edwin Bye observed, ”Waugh has interpreted Grant at his best, in warm, rich, well-blended tones, with earnest expression. It is the man, not the hero nor President, who is presented here.”
