State Museum Nature and Man

State Museum Nature and Man
Oldenburg, Germany

The collection of Kuprianov contains, next to clothing made out of leather or intestines, tools for producing said clothing. The shown object, the so called Ulus is a slate knife for manufacturing clothing by the Unangan. Nowadays, those knifes got a metal blade. The handle of the knife often resembles the helping spirit, who would help the woman using it to produce the clothing. Sometimes, the handle would resemble the animal, the man was hunting, while wearing the manufactured clothes for the hunt. The displayed handle of the knife resembles a bird.
