Underground I and II, which have formed part of the MUSA’s collection since 2015, are from this last stage. Leaving abstraction behind, Nava used digital technology to show an underworld that literally and metaphorically lies beneath the city. The works are made with manipulated photos, one of which is a self-portrait of the artist, both of which were made during the process of an illness that eventually took his life. The dramatic images are encapsulated in a metal case in the form of a sewer drain or colander.
