Artwork created by Deepak Ramola for #UndertheHijab
Artist statement: "On my flight from New York to Mumbai, I read an article that said how the stereotyping of Hijab was making a entire generation of young people form strong negative opinions about people who wear the hijab and how threatening it is to the survival of a diverse society. Now, all my life, I have had friends who wear the hijab and are as cool as one can imagine someone to be. As an educator and a human being, I don't want young minds to form hateful impressions of hijab clad girls and women. The only way, I know one can help change this perspective is using art. Art in it's very core has the power of mass revolution and changing mindsets."
#UnderTheHijab is an artists’ collective that aims to break the stereotypes related to those who wear a Hijab. The series was inspired by the story of a young Syrian girl, Sarah, who was called a terrorist for wearing a hijab. Moved and provoked by Sarah’s story the founder of Project FUEL, Deepak Ramola, curated a series of artworks using the hashtag #UnderTheHijab.
