Artwork created by Arjun Paul for #UndertheHijab
Artist statement: "Belief, that an ideology that has existed nearly for a millennia and a half will not succumb to bigotry. There is belief that the Hijab is a tool for the oppression of women in Islam while arguments have been put forth for it’s utilitarian uses. The Hijab is a veil used by muslim women to conceal themselves. This is not to assert male superiority and hide the ‘lesser’ sex, it is a shield. A veil adorned by a woman is to protect her from profanity. A hijab is worn by a muslim woman as a matter of honour; for a it affirms that she is sacred, valued and a manifestation of the Divine Beauty."
#UnderTheHijab is an artists’ collective that aims to break the stereotypes related to those who wear a Hijab. The series was inspired by the story of a young Syrian girl, Sarah, who was called a terrorist for wearing a hijab. Moved and provoked by Sarah’s story the founder of Project FUEL, Deepak Ramola, curated a series of artworks using the hashtag #UnderTheHijab.
