The album artwork for Marsalis's Black Codes (From the Underground), another GRAMMY winner. Pictured on the cover is Wynton's younger brother, Jason Marsalis. The liner notes, written by Stanley Crouch, dictate that Wynton "calls this album Black Codes (From the Underground) as a reference to the prohibitive 19th century slave laws that emphasized depriving chattels of anything other than what was necessary to maintain their positions as talking work animals."
