Matthew Hamilton Baird (1819–1899) and his brother Samuel Baird (1817–1903) owned several pastoral runs in the Western District, close to the present-day towns of Woolsthorpe and Hawkesdale. These included Kangatong, Glengowe, Warrong and Woodlands, which were acquired between 1866 and 1886. Matthew Hamilton Baird also previously owned Mount Bute near Skipton. The property depicted here, however, cannot be identified definitively.

- A.E. Ferris: Charles Hamilton Lawry was born at Cape Otway, where his father, Andrew Lawry, had recently settled at Stony Rises, a property between the Cape and Lake Corangamite. It has not been established whether there is a familial link between the Baird and Lawry families.
