Shackleton's British Antarctic Expedition Union Flag on a bamboo pole with a silver presentation plaque in the form of a ribbon hung shield. On 7 August 1907, Queen Alexandra presented Shackleton with this flag for him to carry to the South Pole. On 9 January, at 88° 23' S, 97 miles (180 km) from the Pole, Shackleton and his team of Wild, Marshall and Adams, planted the Queen's flag in the snow, photographed themselves at a new Furthest South record and turned back. The flag was later returned to Queen Alexandra.
