This photograph shows the unpacking of items that have been shipped from Japan for the Royal Academy’s 1935 show, The International Exhibition of Chinese Art. Over 3,000 works were on display, the majority of them shipped over by the Royal Navy. Records state that the exhibition was attended by 401,768 visitors, making it one of the RA’s first hugely successful loan exhibitions.
