Unsupported Edge

The panes of glass fit directly together, without any pillars. This was something completely new. The lightness and suspension of this edge was created on conventional foundation. On May 10, 1959, Walter Gropius said of the unsupported edge: "It has always been my motive, both then and now, to give the building the impression of floating—not being connected to the ground—by setting back the plinth and making it dark, in contrast to the main body, and by choosing leather-colored roof tiles. I still use the same approach today."

Quote: "Walter Gropius und das Fagus-Werk" (Walter Gropius and the Fagus Factory), Helmut Weber, Verlag Georg D.W. Callwey Munich: 1961, page 75
