Born in the year 1930, Solomon Irein Wangboje had his higher institutional studies in the Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology (NCAST), Zaria. Through his works, he commonly portrays scenes from everyday life as well as mythical concepts. Popularly known as a master print Maker, he was also recognized as the first Nigerian professor of fine arts. During his time, he wrote extensively on Nigerian art education and this distinguished him as a renowned educator.

This piece is an African interpretation of the Madonna and Child, a central theme in Christian iconography. Wangboje depicts Mary, the mother of Jesus, holding the infant Christ, merging religious themes with African artistic sensibilities.
