Bernice Bing—artist, activist, Chinese American, and lesbian—bridged Abstract Expressionism with the fluidity of Chinese calligraphy. Immersed in the San Francisco Bay Area’s Beat scene, she developed a distinctive style of gestural mark-making, layering vibrant color with script-like strokes. Created in the late 1980s, Untitled reflects her ongoing dialogue between East and West, tradition and experimentation. Long overlooked in her lifetime, Bing’s work has since been celebrated for its dynamism and cultural hybridity, embodying both personal resilience and a broader search for belonging within American abstraction.
