Ascon Chung Hyun started to create human figures using asphalt, concrete(ascon), unprocessed stones, and coal lumps. These human figures represent the reality of being as the time-worn figures still retain a sense of dignity and common humanity. The artist cuts up the ascon with an electric saw which retains its physical properties. Unprocessed stones and coal lumps, found in abundance on the streets, are used together with ties found on railroad tracks which are an aged material that contains weightiness of time. Ascon is quite an unusual art material which the artist found appealing for its rough and taught skin that seems to shield strong energy and tough life force within.
