Ascon Chung Hyun started to create human figures using asphalt, concrete(ascon), unprocessed stones and coal lumps. These human figures represent the reality of being as the time-worn figures yet retain a sense of dignity and common humanity. The artist cuts up the ascon masses with an electric saw which as material retain its physical properties. From unprocessed stones and coal lumps which is found in abundance on the streets is used together with ties found on railroad tracks, which is an aged material that contains weightiness of time. The use of ascon is quite an unusual art material which the artist found appealing for the rough and taught skin seems to shield strong energy and tough life force underneath.
