“Any movement across a flat surface that is not dictated by physical necessity is a spatial form of self-assertion, whether one is building an empire or going on holiday”, Jean-Luc Godard. The work consists of two gutted old ambulances left to rot in parking spaces outside the maternity hospital. The vehicles, which were not refurbished for the project, were rearranged and loaded with lighted lamps of various kinds found around the hospital and grounds, including wrought iron lampposts, desk lamps and even surgical spots. The cars were left in a place that preserved the memory of their former function, namely parking spaces, thus creating a dialectic between mobility and rest, extensive movement (geographic) and intensive movement (subjective and aesthetic, independent of actual spatial movement). On a car sticker we read the above-cited line from Godard.
