Paolo Cotani (1940-2011) attended the Academy of Decorative Arts in Paris and moved to London in 1964, returning to Rome in 1970. His painting is anti-iconic, made of layers of color, and embraces an abstract style that focuses on the analysis of the syntactic tools of painting. Surface, color, light, and support are part of a process of zeroing and reduction, where the work ends up coinciding with the procedure, or the praxis that generated it. In 1975, he went through one of his most significant research moments with "Elastic Bandages", made by wrapping a frame with previously painted cloth bandages. "Untitled" (1981) is part of the cycle "Virtual and Worldly Spaces", where the artist creates different planes of visual perception on the canvas.
