Leonard Hilton McGurr, professionally known as Futura, is an American graffiti artist that began his career painting illegally on New York City's subway in the early 1970s. In the 1980s, he exhibited with peers such as Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring at Manhattan's Fun Gallery. While the artist's graffiti contemporaries typically focused on lettering and pictorial muralism, Futura pioneered a different kind of abstract street art. The artist's impressionistic fields of colour paved the way for new generations of artists. Throughout his career, Futura's practice has spanned the creative world from collaborating with streetwear designers to exhibiting in contemporary art galleries. For the 2015 Nuart Festival, McGurr created a monumental colour block mural in central Stavanger.
