Kashmiri Artist Ghulam Rasool Santosh's abstract paintings used ideas in Indian religious iconography, Tantric philosophy and Kashmiri Shaivism after visiting Amarnath Cave in 1964. He joined Kashmir's Progressive Artists Association, which was inspired by Bombay's Progressive Artists Group in the 1950s. G.R.Santosh, who began his career by painting signboards, weaving and making paper-mâché objects to support his family, received the Lalit Kala Akademi Award and Padma Shri in 1977.
