Alexandria born Hussein Bicar (1913-2002) was both artist and art critic, poet and lute player. Among his many works, the Nubian paintings indicate a rootedness in Egyptian culture while his personal portraits are remarkable in colour and scope. He painted in a realist style known for its curvilinear shapes and unique representations of children. This link with youth is pursued in his illustrations of Egypt’s first children’s magazine Sindbad. His column titled “Shades and Colours” appeared in the Al-Akhbar (The News) newspaper. Beyond print, he is especially known for his drawings of Ancient Egypt for the John Feeny movie film Springs of the Sun which played in Cairo’s renowned Cinema Metro in the 1960s.
