"The works Study for Tudo te é falso e inútil (Everything is False and Useless to You) series and untitled (accession number D3206) demonstrate how permanent the subject matter developed during the previous two decades has become and how much the art techniques employed have converged. Their strong graphic quality involves a fundamental element of line alongside a painterly approach which goes beyond a mere filling in of the composition backgrounds.
[...] In the second drawing the visual field is divided by the strong diagonal running across the space. The lower part is completely dark, suggesting a solid, stable physical space. The density of the cut space interrupts the softness of the figure, which is depicted in gentle shades of grey and black, contrasting with the paleness of the headless mannequin, drawn with luminous orange brushstrokes.
The effects are achieved through the use of quick-drying materials such as gouache and ink, which require fast work and cannot be changed later. The fragility of paper also demands a careful approach. These factors certainly play a part in the results produced. The subject matter remains, as we can see: cyclists, solitary figures, mannequins, all with a somewhat muted handling. These are small works on paper, with extensive use of wash, heightened with incisive lines in pencil and ink. As a way of painting and drawing simultaneously it demonstrates the artist’s exceptional technical mastery and defies any definitive classification."
