Kochi, India

Jamini Roy, a student of the Bengal School, is best known for the blend of traditional Indian Art and Western Art styles. His search for authentic Indian art led him to the folk-art traditions of Kalighat and Bengali scroll paintings. First, he experimented with monochromatic works. Then he used natural Indian colours to create simple yet striking images of rural scenes, women and mythological stories. Today, Roy's art is in the Victoria and Albert Museum collections in London, the Harn Museum of Art at the University of Florida, and the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi, among many others.
