Awarded Padma Bhushan in 1955, a student of the Bengal School, Jamini Roy was a famous Indian artist who never sold his works at a premium price. His search for authentic Indian art led him to the folk-art traditions of Kalighat and Bengali scroll paintings. First, he experimented with monochromatic works. Then he used natural Indian colours to create simple yet striking images of rural scenes, women and mythological stories. His paintings are in national and international collections. Jamini Roy is considered as one of the 'Nine Masters' to be treated like a treasure.
