Jannis Kounellis moved from his native Greece to Italy in 1956 and began exhibiting his work while still a student at the Accademia in Rome. Since the beginning of his career he has seen as urgent the need for a profound renewal of artistic language in keeping with the moment in history in which he works. The installation is made up of a series of coats and shoes arranged to make up a compact whole. Worn and then discarded, the garments retain the trace of the people who wore them, testifying the historical truth, but affirming the inevitable absence.
