Hand painted photograph of Square Top Mountain by Joseph E. Stimson. The landscape consists of a large rock formation with fur trees that are reflected in a body of water in the foreground.

Squaretop Mountain is located in western Sublette County. It was once called Roosevelt Butte.

In 1890, Joseph E. Stimson began photographing Wyoming’s parks, ranches, people and landscapes, hoping to promote the brand-new state. In 1901 Stimson was hired as a publicity photographer for the Union Pacific Railroad. The railroad needed photographs to help change the image of the scandal-plagued railroad and Stimson was given free rein to photograph anything that might draw investors to the railway. Besides the obvious subject of the railroad itself, Stimson was to photograph natural wonders, city scenes, farms and ranches, mining and irrigation projects, and anything else that might bring money to the new railroad.
