A versatile artist, a scholar who trained under Nandalal Bose and Benode Behari Mukherjee in Santiniketan, Kalpathi Ganpathi Subramanyan (K.G. Subramanyan) was an extraordinary figure of Indian Art. He became a lecturer at the Fine Arts Faculty of MSU, Baroda, in 1951. He introduced a curriculum at MSU, Baroda, drawing inspirations from the Santiniketan tradition of collaborative mural projects and the 'living tradition' of folk and tribal arts.

He was inspired by Indian legends and myths, and these were executed in a wide range of mediums, including paintings, murals, pottery, weaving and glass painting. His writings on Indian Art have been influential in the study of contemporary Indian Art.
