Known for her monumental, monochromatic, and wooden sculptures, Nevelson's work is comprised of puzzles with intricately cut pieces and found objects combined into complex constructions that resemble nonfunctional furniture. As one of America's foremost artists, her sculpted wood assemblages transcended space and transformed the viewer's perception of art. In her words, "Black is the most aristocratic color of all. The only aristocratic color..." Nevelson and Alfonso Ossorio were close friends, and she often visited The Creeks, Ossorio's estate in East Hampton.
