In the lead up to 'Open Heart Surgery', the Moving Museum in London, Marianne Spurr worked in situ at 180 The Strand, accumulating and organising various materials and objects that she found on site and making new works and drawings directly in the space. The resulting installation was a multi-layered sculptural arrangement combining these various elements with textural fields in a fragile and temporary spatial composition.

Guided by both intuitive and logical processes, Spurr thinks through her materials in search of something - an event or an understanding. She explores and tests the material relationships between objects to identify free and poetic associations.

Central to this work was the exploration of materiality and texture; white mohair against hard concrete, clean on dirty, wet black oil, tangled rope against glass. The artist likens these elements to notes, with which she can play around to compose freestyle chords and arrangements. She connects, threads and tunes her materials in an on-going process of making and unmaking, doing and undoing.

Marianne Spurr (b. 1981, London) is an artist living and working in London. She received her MA in Painting from The Royal College of Art, London and her BA in Fine Art from Ruskin School of Art, Oxford.
