  • Biography: Nandalal Bose was born at Kharagpur, a small town in the Monghyr district of Bihar state, in 1882. Regarded as the most disciplined of the many students of his mentor Abanindranath Tagore, he was also a much-loved pupil at the Government College of Art. In 1954, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan. In 1956, he became the second artist to be elected Fellow of the Lalit Kala Akademi, India's National Academy of Art. Several universities conferred honorary doctorates on him. In 1976, the Archaeological Survey of India, Department of Culture, Government of India acknowledged his works among the nine artists, whose works even though not being antiquities, should be to be considered as art treasures. Nandalal Bose passed away in 1966 in Santiniketan.
