Biography: Ramkinkar Baij was born in 1906 in Bankura, Bengal. He completed his art education from Kala Bhavan, Vishwa Bharati University, Santiniketan in 1925, under the tutelage of Nandalal Bose and Rabindranath Tagore. He was also trained by the two European sculptors, who were on a visit to Santiniketan. In 1934, he joined as teaching faculty at Santiniketan. Baij received Padma Bhushan award in 1970. A retrospective exhibition of his works was held at the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi in 1990. He died in 1980, in Calcutta.
