A poignant painting by Ramsès Younan, whose conceptual work was primarily based on Freudian theories of the subconscious and was a loud cry against prevailing classic academicism. Here he depicts three female figures, probably the same woman, in different agonizing states. Seated, standing or lying on the floor, she is shown physically disfigured and helplessly armless. Never looking at the viewer, she seems in psychological pain and is confined in a tiny macabre cell, though a tiny window to the outside world shows a blue light of hope. the mourning and the social despair prevailing during that period are depicted through her psychological torment.
