Filming for Viridiana began at the C.E.A. Studios in Madrid on February 4,
1961, when recording the exterior of Villa Matilde, an estate outside the
capital where Ramón Masats conducted a photo report of
Luis Buñuel. Here he documented distinct moments when the director worked
with the rest of the team on the creative and technical aspects of filming, this becoming an
example of the image of Buñuel smiling and relaxed,
with a photometer inside his case. Viridiana was not the only instance when
Masats assisted filmmaking as a photo reporter. That
same year he was present at sets for El Cid and The Fall of the Roman
Empire, both directed by Anthony Mann, or 55 Days at Peking by Nicholas
Ray.
