Lewis, an abstract expressionist, was elected the first president of the Spiral Group, a legendary confederation of African American artists who wished to contribute to the civil rights movement. Lewis was often the only member who could demonstrate a commitment to anti-formalism on paper as well as a commitment to social realism.
