The Dene of the western Subarctic took pride in their clothing. The apparel they wore was an outward expression of their status: clothing finely made and ornamented was a man’s indication of hunting success and a woman’s exhibition of her artistic skills and pride in her family’s accomplishments. The wearer of this belt presented a colourful and musical image that expressed success, self confidence, status, and prestige.
