Yuan Yunsheng was born in 1937 in Nantong, Jiangsu Province. He is good at oil painting. In 1962, he graduated from Dong Xiwen Studio, Department of Oil Painting, Central Academy of Fine Arts. He has successively been professor and doctoral supervisor of the Central Academy of Arts and Crafts, and director of the fourth studio of the Department of Oil Painting. He is member of China Artists Association and honored as professor with special contribution to the country. He moved to the United States in 1982 and taught at Tufts University, University of Massachusetts, Smith College and Harvard University. Since 1988, he has worked as a professional artist in New York. In 1996, he was invited to return to China to be the director and professor of the fourth studio of the Oil Painting Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts. From 2002 to now, he has served as Deputy Director and Doctoral Tutor of Academic Committee of Central Academy of Fine Arts. He has created large-scale murals for Beijing International Airport, Tufts University Library and Harvard University, such as "Water Sprinkling Festival - A Song of Life", "Red + Blue + Yellow = White"? About Two Mythological Stories of China and Human Fables. In 2005, at the invitation of City University of Hong Kong, two giant murals, Confucius Qinsi and Wanhu Feitian, were created and placed on the main walls on both sides of the University gate. His representative works include The Martyr, Loneliness and Shrinking Brush. The publications include Yunnan White Sketches, Yunsheng Sketches, Yuan Yunsheng Sketches and Yuan Yunsheng Paintings.
