A towering figure in Indian Art, K. G. Subramanyan was a versatile artist and scholar trained under Nandalal Bose and Benode Behari Mukherjee in Shantiniketan. He joined the Faculty of Fine Arts in MSU, Baroda, as a lecturer in 1951. He introduced the Santiniketan tradition of collaborative mural projects at Baroda and integrated living traditions of folk and tribal art into the curriculum.
His works drew inspiration from Indian legends and myths and were executed in various mediums, including paintings, murals, pottery, weaving and glass painting. His writings on Indian Art have been influential in the study of contemporary Indian Art.
