Jiří Kolář's collages were intended to influence the viewer's view on life. The artist liked to use fragments of texts and images from different sources. This, indeed, creates an impression of a destruction and fragmentation of the world presented.

The collage technique led to quite surprising and visually striking combinations, such as the combination of astronomical maps with Braille writing. The artist helped to develop some new techniques of collage: confrontage, chiasmage, and froissage among others.
