In this sculpture Cristina Iglesias makes use of a functional, architectural element in the form of a curved porch roof that projects out from the wall towards the viewer. She creates a zone that the viewer can enter, look up and see the light through the alabaster plaques. This movement towards the inside of the sculpture and the resulting experience is something that this artist has specifically looked for and is reflected in her statement that she wishes to “construct a place where the experience of being there is meaningful”. Iglesias creates spaces in which the viewer can experience emotions. Works of this type, attached to the wall, depart from the traditional positioning of sculpture as “statue” and as a solid, vertical mass on a pedestal that can be walked around. In contrast, in works such as this one the sculpture is located in a de-centred place, at the edge of the room, and is made of weightless, floating and luminous forms. This is also evident in other projects for which Iglesias has made entire awnings or ceilings suspended in space.
