  • Description: Ohtake developed a simple yet refined style characterized by vibrant hues and thick textural paint application influenced by both informalismo and Gutai. Both Zen and Japanese calligraphy clearly influenced the linear motifs of her 1968 untitled painting. Broad, violet bands extend vertically, each bowing slightly inward so that they touch in the center. The edges of the forms are rugged and unkempt, and Ohtake allowed the color to bleed into the surrounding crème color. Much of the painting concerns contrast and contradiction with its opposing rectilinear yet curving forms, light and dark tonalities, and transparency and opacity. These polar oppositions allude to Zen’s philosophical interest in contradiction and paradox. -Text by Cierra Frances
