Para Matchitt’s Untitled paintings of the late 1960s are a conceptual narrative relating to the life of Te Kooti Arikirangi Te Turuki of Rongowhakaata, a legendary political figure from 19th-century New Zealand, and founder of the Ringatū faith. The four-part painting portrays experiences, beliefs and events as seen by Te Kooti’s followers. Matchitt celebrates Te Kooti’s capacity to make an impact in both history and art history in the late 20th century, in his largest and most enduring work on the subject.
