Possibilities
Every painter has an infinite number of possibilities open to him. He faces a blank surface which he can transform with colours and lines into a space filled with life.
To accomplish this in a way that makes sense means searching for a motif, giving form to the motif, and constant self-criticism.
The first and depressing result of this endeavour and this self-criticism is insight into one’s own incompetence; you become aware that you’re an ass.
This insight weighs so heavily on the painter that he soon tries to compensate by being pretentious and full of himself; hence the impression that artists are arrogant.
