Urban women's costume of Ioannina

One of the many types of the Ioannina urban costume distinguished by the presence of the “pirpiri”, a kind of overcoat of the Ottoman period shaped like a “doulamas” or dolman. It was worn throughout the Balkans, with local variations. It has a pure silk “vraka” (braies) and a chemise of off-white “bibizari” (silk fabric). The “anderi” (bridal coat) is made of white brocade with gold stripes and small green flowers. From the early 19th century onwards we find this brocade, with variations, being used as a lining material in some “fermeles” (men's waistcoat). Over the anderi is the pirpiri, made of dark felt with gold embroidery and braid forming a scalloped edge all round.
