The commandment "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy" is a cornerstone of Judaism. This ordained day of rest, linked to the seventh day of creation, is greeted with reverence and joy.

Mother reigns supreme at home on the eve of the Sabbath. Dressed in her luminous silk gown and fur-trimmed jacket, she has just recited the blessing over the candles on the hanging Sabbath lamp. To beautify the occasion, she uses her loveliest ceremonial objects and prepares delicacies for the festive meal. The two required loaves of hallah and a silver wine goblet are placed on the elegant lace tablecloth. A platter of poached fish is set on a nearby commode. In the background hangs a laver for the ritual handwashing before the meal. The father, glancing at his watch, waits impatiently with his son to leave for the synagogue.
