The Pitfall video game designed by David Crane for Activision was released on the Atari 2600 in 1982. The player controls the character Pitfall Harry and is tasked with collecting all the treasures in a jungle within 20 minutes while avoiding obstacles and hazards. Possibly due in part to the popularity of the Indiana Jones series of films popular at that time, Pitfall was the number one selling home video game for all of 1982. The game is also notable for helping define the side-scrolling game format. Milton Bradley quickly licensed the title for a board game simulation that same year.
