Louisa May Alcott published her novel "Little Women" in two volumes which appeared in 1868 and 1869. The books, set in Massachusetts during the American Civil War, told of the March sisters--Amy, Meg, Jo, and Beth and their lives during the deprivations of the war and after. Alcott, drawing on her own life with her three sisters presents themes of family love, loss, and coming of age. Alcott wrote two sequels to her works of the March sisters. Although set in a long-ago time, the classic story remains popular, inspiring at least four films, two TV series, an opera, and a play.
