National Museum - New Delhi

National Museum - New Delhi
New Delhi , India

This sculpture of Vaikuntha Chaturmurti displays a four-headed Vishnu standing on a rectangular pedestal. The Goddess of Earth (Prithivi) is portrayed between Vishnu's feet, with her arms stretched as if she is holding him up. He is flanked by Gadadevi and Chakrapurusha, the personified images of his attributes ─ the gada (mace) and the chakra (wheel). Similar four-faced Vishnu images were made from a very early period in Indian art, beginning during the Kushana rule.
