This monumental valance, which comes from a Prague workshop, was placed above the doors of the Ark and represents the biblical kapporet in the synagogue interior – the cover of the Ark of the Covenant. Motifs embroidered in the scallops of the valance on the left include the breastplate of the High Priest, shewbread, an altar with flames, the tablets of the Ten Commandments, the seven-branched candelabrum, the copper basin (lavabo) and the diadem of the High Priest; above the tables are depicted the great wings of cherubim whose heads are concealed under the crown of Torah. Inscription: Donated by the Holy Society of the Singers of Psalms and Reciters of Barukh she-Amar in the Great Court Synagogue (1720).
