The Vardon Trophy is open to male amateur golfers who hold a current Australian or overseas equivalent handicap of four and under.
Apart from winning the 1959 Vardon Trophy and representing Australia as an amateur golfer, Victor John Bulgin (1927–2007) was a rugby league footballer. An Australia national and New South Wales state representative rugby league fullback, he played for Sydney's Eastern Suburbs and Canterbury-Bankstown clubs.
In 1959, he was runner up to Kel Nagle in the Australian Open.
