Ladoga and Red Fife wheat varieties, Central Experimental Farm.

Red Fife was a Galician variety known for making high-quality flour. It was susceptible to frost, however, due to a late maturing time. Ladoga was a Russian strain. It was hoped that Ladoga would be the answer to Canada’s problems, as the Russian climate was similar to the Northwest. While Ladoga did mature earlier, its flour was not as high quality.
